About Ares
Ares is the Greek god of war. His Roman counterpart is Mars. He represents the physical or violent and untamed aspect of war, in contrast to his sister, the armored Athena who represents military strategy as a goddess of intelligence. He embodied the physical valor necessary for success in war and was a dangerous force. His sons Fear (Phobos) and Terror (Deimos) and his lover, or sister, Discord (Enyo) accompanied him on his war chariot.
During the Trojan War, Ares favored the losing side whereas his sister Athena favored the victors (the Greeks), placing his value as the god of war in doubt. He was known as the lover of Aphrodite, but was caught and humiliated for this by her husband Hephaestus. His Roman counterpart Mars, though, was given a far more dignified status as a father figure and a guardian deity in the ancient Roman religion.
